"What's up? You okay?" I asked Rudy.
"I'm just frustrated. I'm feeling like that job in Arkansas is not going to happen?"
He was irritated. I was concerned his good nature was going to fly out the window, soon.
"Brad needs braces. I just want to be able to help out. A job would help us," he mumbled.
I took a bite of the millionth cookie I was holding. I was feeling like him. Something had to give. Something.
He sat down next to me. Put his arm around my shoulder. I burrowed myself into him.
"It's all going to work out," I quietly said, knowing it would. Eventually.
We sat there. Lost in our own thoughts.
"Hey, Dad! What's for dinner?" Brad inquired.
"I'm making tacos."
"Will I like them?"
"Sure, if you like everything homemade. Fresh. You know tortillas, salsa, and coleslaw. And barbequed chicken, shredded." Rudy embellished.
"Alright." Brad seemed unsure. "Oh, can we rent a movie or two?
"Yep. Let's do that now," I jumped up off the couch.
As we were watching the crowd of people, on TV, in Times Square, celebrating, anticipating the arrival of the new year, Brad kept his eye on the clock while I was thinking about what could the next year possibly give us, as Rudy fell asleep.

ReplyDeleteIt is amazing when you look back like that, how much things can change in the space of one year! I've often thought how amazing it would be if we were to write a journal entry on January 1st of each year and then look back 12 months later, to see how different things turned out...
